GUILD PROGRAM

GUILD PROGRAM

Making a positive and progressive impact in our community is one path we will never deviate from! This has always been our drive and thankfully, in August 2021, with great joy in our hearts, we officially launched our Guild Centre, a place where young people in our Festac Town community can come to explore and discover knowledge, experiences, skills, and opportunities for their growth and learning. We kicked off with a computer programming scheme,  a 6 months program where enrolled students will gain computer literacy skills, particularly in programming languages like HTML, javascript, etc.

Setting up the Guild Centre was only possible with the supportive folks in the PYP family. At the beginning of the year, we began our search for a suitable venue that would serve as our office as well as a place for our programs and in May, we finally found one and work began earnestly in terms of setting it up to fit into what we envisioned, after which we brought in the laptops that were donated to us by the IVT Institute in ETH Zurich.

To set the program into motion, we had a fundraising campaign which while not successful gave us enough operational funds to begin.

Initially, our plan was to enroll 12 PYP alumni who would be given a scholarship to attend the program, then add 8 external students who are to pay ₦10,000 monthly to cover continuous operational cost. However, we were not able to get any external students as at our proposed kickstart date, so we went ahead to start the program with 11 PYP alumni who were required to pay a monthly commitment fee of ₦500 each alongside a written essay to qualify them for participation every month.

On Saturday, August 7th, 2021, we held an orientation session with the selected students and their respective parents. Prior to this day, messages had already been sent out to inform them of the event. We received the parents and students at our venue and the orientation began at 11:00 am. Here, they were all formally introduced to the program, what it entails, the courses, the rules guiding it, days that classes would hold among others. After the session, the Centre was opened and the parents were shown the facilities we would use for the purpose of the program and they were very excited at the opportunity given to their children.

The following Saturday, August 14th, 2021, we officially kicked off the program with their first class of the day, an introduction to the computer operating system (Linux) they would be using for their computer training course. The students came with so much enthusiasm, eagerness and kept on asking questions upon questions from their tutor so much so that a 2-hour class ended up stretching to 3 hours, and from their expression, one could tell that they enjoyed the class and have so many expectations as to what they would learn as the class progresses.

We are hopeful for this new journey for these kids because we know that this program will give them a new perspective and broaden their minds to the various opportunities around them. We hope to enroll more students to be partakers of this program because it is going to be here for a long time to come.
